Botanical Garden Tour in Bogota

The Botanical Garden tour in Bogotá is a world full of color and nature, with an area of 19 acres. Its name honors the memory of José Celestino Mutis Sage, Director of botanical expedition. The Park promotes and carries out conservation activities, environmental education and research on the diversity of Colombian flora, in particular on the Savannah of Bogotá. The Park was founded in 1955 by the Colombian scientist Enrique Pérez Arbeláez. Within their collections are representations of: Andean forest, oak forest, Misty Grove, conifer, Criptogamium (plants with no flowers), herbs (medicinal plants), rose garden and greenhouses with plants from hot, dry weather and rainy, between many other varieties.

Of special interest is the systematic, a place where the plants are arranged according to their degree of evolution, that is, you can see the plant ever since it was little until his adult form. The Park has a Lake, waterfall, laboratories, tunnels of propagation, classroom environment and an auditorium for lectures and concerts. Offers services such as library, video library, sale of publications, restaurant and nursery. Develops children’s workshops, environmental expeditions, technical advice and temporary exhibitions of orchids, bromeliads, roses, bonsai and heliconias.

This Park is owned by the municipality and it is famous in the whole country, the park is also a member of the internationally known BGCI (Botanic Gardens Conservation International).

Among other curiosities, the park features a sundial, a palmetum (an area within the Botanical Garden for the cultivation, research, conservation and public exposure of species of Palms), a collection of orchids and a wide variety of flowers of the Amazon.

    :

We went on a four hour tour of the botanical gardens in the morning and another four hour evening tour that included viewing the sunset from La Calera and then looking at some neighborhoods in the north of Bogota and dinner in Usaquen. We finished by walking around the Park of the 93 and also in Usaquen to look at the architecture in both areas up close. The botanical gardens would have only been a nice stroll on our own. David was able to point out what various plants have useful properties and historical contexts. We also did some taste testing at the farmer’s market (it was a Sunday). The highlight of the night tour was the explanation of the historical context of the menu items at the restaurant in Usaquen.
