Graffiti Tour in Bogota

Graffiti Tour in Bogota – The term graffiti, derived from the Italian word “graffito” is one of the oldest arts to express feelings or to set a political statement in form of scribbled, scratched or painted elements on walls or facades. While many countries treat street art as an abomination often carried out by belligerent youths with criminal tendencies, Colombia has embraced it as the artistic expression of its people. Artists are often commissioned to create facades in a bid by businesses to avoid mindless tagging, and advertising campaigns utilise the medium as a channel to reach their market. For the graffiti artists themselves, it is a chance to create social and powerful commentary about the nation’s politics or simply to brighten the days of the people who have suffered at the hands of Colombia’s somewhat traumatic past.

During our Graffiti tour in Bogota, we will also visit the downtown of Bogota. Besides the great graffiti art we get to know various vintage and alternative shops, trendy pubs and other fancy places to get in touch with the locals.

On our way we encounter different graffitis from worldwide known street artists and can enjoy the art of the most famous Colombian street art crew  namend APC ( Animal Power Crew). Other famous artists are Toxicomano, DEXS, Stinkfish, DJ Lu and Lesivo who is known for his political grafics. You will be amazed, how much the graffitis will tell us about the Colombian history. During the tour we will possibly change your mind about the fascinating art of Graffitis and provide another point of view.

I only had one day in Bogota before my main holiday in Colombia began. I knew there wasn’t time to see everything, so I decided to just concentrate on a small area that would be interesting to photograph – I’m inspired by colour and I love street art. Oscar (my guide) took time to listen to what I wanted to do, then also to think about the places he thought I would enjoy. I had a fabulous day out with him strolling the streets and just taking everything in. He was so patient when I constantly stopped to take photographs and was great company too, explaining the history and culture of the city (and Colombia itself) and also some of his own life. We had coffee at Juan Valdez and thoughtfully suggested lunch at a gorgeous vegetarian restaurant (Quinua y Amaranto). In the afternoon he drove me out of the centre to view some of the massive street art along the main roads – and stopped the car so I could jump out an take photographs!

All in all an excellent, properly personalised tour, tailored exactly to my interests – worth every penny and I highly recommend if you’re particular about things you want to do!
