The origins of Tejo date back to pre-Hispanic times when the Muisca civilization inhabited the region now occupied by Bogotá and its neighboring towns. Over 600 years ago, in an exercise of aim and skill, the Muiscas would throw gold discs at clay-filled boxes: the closer the discs landed to the center of the box, the higher the score.
The game managed to survive the colonial period, and by the 20th century, it gained an exciting addition—gunpowder.
Today, Tejo is known for its explosive nature: modern Tejo fields are loud places, not only because of the players’ excitement but also due to the sound of explosions created by the impact between the disc (now made of steel) and the gunpowder targets. However, the game's main objective remains the same as it was centuries ago: to land the discs as close to the center of the box as possible.
