Bogotá, formerly known as Santa Fe de Bogotá, is the capital and largest city in Colombia. It is also the capital of the department of Cundinamarca. It was founded in 1538 by Jiménez de Quesada and was the capital of the Vice-royalty of New Granada until the independence. As the main financial, cultural, administrative and urban centre of the country, Bogotá has approximately 7.2 million inhabitants residing only in its urban core, making it one of the most populous cities in South America.
