Guatavita Tour – El Dorado Legend

From the beginning of our tour we will be enjoying viewpoints strategically located to give us the best view. For about an hour and a half, we will be witnessing the beautiful landscapes that surround the city, until we arrive to the new Guatavita, a picturesque town with unique architecture, located next to Tominé dam. From there, we will continue our way to the exceptionally beautiful lagoon where we can enjoy the popular legend of El Dorado, based on a Muiscal ritual with gold as the main theme.

Take a picture of the lagoon and its stunning and mystical backdrop to keep forever in your memory, then we will explore the typical flavors of the traditional dishes from this part of the country.

You have the option to combine this Guatavita Tour with other places of unique beauty such as Zipaquira or Nemocón, where we can see more picturesque scenery and handcrafts made by the natives.

I’ve gone with Hansa twice now – once to Nemocon and Zipaquira, and the 2nd time to Laguna Guatavita, Guatavita town, and La Calera. All their tours are private tours and thus can be customized for your interests. The two guides I had were also very knowledgeable and it was easy to converse in English as my Spanish is poor. Its also very easy to arrange a tour with them, just message them on WhatsApp

I rarely take guided tours but thought that it would be useful for my first day in Colombia to have a guide. I couldn’t have made a better choice.

I took the City Photo Tour (which was really a tour of photogenic places in the City) with Marcelo Bitti as my guide. Marcelo was friendly, energetic and a walking encyclopedia. He is an awesome guide. We visited Monserrate and Guadelupe Hill for great vistas of the City, then some graffiti street art in Candelaria, then lunch (good Colombian food) and then off to the market to taste lots of local fruit.

Marcelo was careful to ask what I was interested in and to fashion the itinerary to meet my interests. At lunch, I was free to choose whatever I wanted to eat (after he made some great suggestions). We didn’t waste time (for me) in souvenir shops. It was exactly the kind of experience I was hoping to have and I learned more about the City and its residents in that 5 hours than I would have learned on my own in a week of travel.

I enjoyed it so much I surprised myself and signed up for a second day of tours to Guatavita. We traveled about an hour out of the city. I was pretty slow, but we took our time and walked up to the lake (it’s a pretty easy walk), the clouds cleared and the sun came out long enough for me to snap some pictures, and then we made our way back to the van in the pouring rain and despite the weather, I counted it as another incredible day in Colombia.

At all times, the drives were friendly, helpful, courteous. Marcelo has a gift for sharing Colombia with his guests.

We booked a full day private tour to the salt cathedral and Guatavita Lake with an English guide. It was simply wonderful. While the costs do appear higher than others providers, you are paying for quality service and comfort.

Our English speaking guide Byron L was amazing. Very well informed about the sights as well as the general history of the area. He was also most personable and offered us many great tips and suggestions as to what else to do for the rest of our trip.

The tour of the lake and salt cathedral was very interesting and informative. Hansa’s private transport was clean, safe and comfortable. Being a private tour, we could adjust our schedule as appropriate and did not have to stick to the timing of buses or a larger group. (We saw other groups that had to cut short their stay at a scenic spot.)

Overall, highly recommend the company and tour. Their staff is excellent and they well anticipate the needs of the traveler. Thank you Hansa and Byron.

We went on the Guatavita El Dorado tour. Our English speaking guide was excellent. He had in depth knowledge of the peoples and history of the region. We were in a private comfortable SUV and could go at our own pace and schedule. At the lake there is a national park with an interesting guided tour. There is about a mile walk up to the edge of the lake, we went slow and it was a nice scenic walk. This is a good tour for those wanting to get out of the city and learn about past cultures and see a very beautiful location.
