Bogota History Tour

Undoubtedly one of the most fascinating aspects of Colombia is it’s turbulent and sometimes unbelievable history, a wealth of which can be found right here in the capital. Prepare to be amazed and learn all you can from a local expert rather than relying on rumours you hear and stereotypes you see on television.

The neighborhood of La Candelaria will be our starting point, the historic center of Bogotá is known by the name of La Candelaria and still retains the memory of the small town that once was. Its steep narrow streets, their colonial houses with roofs and eaves were the cradle and chamber of The Creole and Spanish aristocracy. To appreciate La Candelaria you should be aware of the myriad of details such as the old Gates emblems, hallways, balconies, ornate windows and of course, its inhabitants that fluctuate between the old “Rolos” and “Cachacos” and a young population linked to academic or cultural activities. It is an area which combines different eras and architectural styles in a variety of buildings, some of which disappeared on April 9, 1948, in the episode known as “El Bogotazo”.

El Chorro de Quevedo displays a picturesque landscape and a beautiful view over the center of Bogotá. The Botero Museum will be our next stop, where you will find different artistic samples.Colonial churches will be our companions in the route to amaze us with its architectural wealth. We will continue our path until we find the emblematic Plaza de Bolívar, where a picture will be appropriate to keep the memory of its Majesty. La Quinta de Bolívar, La 20 of July House and the Nineteenth Century Museum will teach us the details of the past eras, in these are located pieces such as furniture and costumes of the era in which the Republic was forged.

I visited Bogotá in April on a research trip funded by my university. I was unfamiliar with the city’s history, so I signed up for a guided tour with Hansa. The experience was totally worth the money I payed. Our tour guide, Guillermo, was friendly, accommodating, and impressively knowledgable about Bogotá’s colonial history. I had the impression that Hansa hires lots of recent university students and researchers who really know what they’re talking about. If you’re looking for a tour of substance, I highly recommend this service!

As you can see from other reviews they are consistently rated excellent and our tours were no exception. We took the 8 hr city tour one day & then the morning Salt Cathedral tour on another day. For both tours our guide was Lina Cruz & driver Alex. Lina did an excellent job & we felt that between both tours we experienced the highlights of Bogotá & the surrounding area in a short period of time that complemented our 4 day stay in the city.
